Water heater repair and installation

Repair when it is worth it, replacement when it is not, and a straight answer about tank versus tankless for how your home actually uses hot water.

A water heater rarely fails at a convenient hour. The good news is that most of them warn you first: recovery slows, the burner short cycles, the tank rumbles as sediment bakes on the bottom. Caught early, some of that is serviceable. Ignored, the ending is a tank letting go into your floor.

When replacement is the honest answer, sizing matters more than brand marketing. A family of five on a 40-gallon tank will always be unhappy, and an oversized tankless in a two-person house is money spent on capacity that never gets used. We size from your fixtures and habits, then install to code with a pan, expansion control and proper venting.

Tankless makes real sense for some homes here and not for others, and the difference is usually gas capacity and usage patterns, not the brochure. We will tell you which side of that line your house is on.

Common questions

Asked and answered

Tank or tankless?

Tankless wins on endless hot water, floor space and service life, and costs more up front, often including gas line upsizing to feed the burner. A quality tank wins on install cost and simplicity. We price both against your actual household usage and let the numbers decide, and we will tell you plainly when tankless does not pencil out for your house.

How long should a water heater last?

Tanks average eight to twelve years in this area, longer with an annual flush and an anode rod change at mid-life. Central Alabama's moderately hard water is what eats them: sediment insulates the burner and corrodes the tank floor. Tankless units commonly run fifteen to twenty years with periodic descaling.

Can you replace it the same day?

Standard tank-for-tank swaps, usually yes, including hauling off the old unit and bringing the installation up to current code: expansion tank, pan and drain where required, seismic strapping, and a proper temperature and pressure relief discharge. Tankless conversions need a site check first for gas capacity and venting, and we schedule those promptly.

My water heater is leaking. How urgent is that?

Depends where. A drip at a fitting or the relief valve is repairable and can wait for a scheduled visit. Water from the tank body itself means the tank has corroded through and replacement is the only fix, and it can go from seep to flood without much warning. Close the cold inlet valve on top, and if it is a tank-body leak, treat it as same-day.

Do you handle the permit and code items on a replacement?

Yes. Water heater replacements are plumbing work under Alabama licensing, and the code items that inspections actually catch, expansion control, relief valve discharge, pan and drain, combustion air on gas units, are included in our written price rather than appearing as surprises later.
