Trenchless vs digging: how we replace a water line

When your service line fails, the first question is not what it costs. It is whether we can replace it without trenching your whole yard. Sometimes yes, sometimes no, and here is how we decide.

The service line runs from your meter to your house, and when it starts leaking underground the damage is invisible until the yard goes soft or the meter spins with everything off. Once we confirm the line is the problem, the real decision is method.

First, we locate, not dig

Acoustic and pressure testing narrows the failure to a few feet. That single step is the difference between a surgical repair and a trench across your entire property, and it is where good line work starts.

Trenchless replacement

Where the soil and routing allow, we pull a new line through the path of the old one. Two small access points instead of one long trench. Your landscaping, driveway and walkways stay largely intact, and the job is usually faster.

  • Far less disruption to yard, drive and hardscape
  • Usually a one-day job
  • Ideal for straight-ish runs in cooperative soil

When digging is the right call

Trenchless is not always possible, and we will tell you when it is not rather than force it. Rock, tight bends, collapsed sections and certain depths make an open trench the honest, better-value choice.

  • Rocky ground or very tight routing
  • A fully collapsed or offset line
  • Situations where a trench is simply cheaper for the same result
We price both methods when both are possible, and let you choose. What we do not do is quote a trench because it is easier for us, or push trenchless where the ground will not cooperate.

How we leave it

New line, tested and inspected, with the site restored and photos of the work for your records. The video above follows a real replacement from the locate through the finished yard.
